EGG

Donor egg is indicated when a lady has conditions such as premature menopause, reduced ovarian reserve, oophorectomy, is of an advanced age, has a genetic disorder such as X-linked disorders, has a cancer needing chemo or radiotherapy, has repeated failed fertilisations.

At Southern Gem Hospital, the egg donor selection is very stringent. The donors qualify only if: They are between 18 years to 30 years of age, have atleast 1 child of their own, have a normal medical, personal and family history and a normal physical and psychological examination. They undergo investigations such as blood grouping, antibody tests for Hepatitis B & C, HIV and Rubella. They also undergo VDRL and other sexually transmitted diseases screening, in addition to the routine testing. They are also screened for genetic disorders, such as thalassemia.

IVF/ICSI with a donor egg: At our centre, donor programs are strictly undertaken as per ICMR guidelines. A selected donor goes through ovarian stimulation, followed by egg collection. These eggs undergo fertilisation with husband’s sperm (legal future father) followed by ET into the uterus of the intending legal mother.

Sperm

The indications for using donor sperm include: complete lack of sperm production (azoospermia), genetic disorder in the male partner and recurring miscarriages.

At Southern Gem Hospital, the selection of sperm donors is done very meticulously. There are strict criteria that are adhered to while selecting the donors, such as: Criteria for Semen Donors: 21 years to 35 years of age, have atleast 1 child of their own, have a normal medical, personal and family history and a normal physical and psychological examination. They undergo investigations such as blood grouping, antibody tests for Hepatitis B & C, HIV. They also undergo VDRL and other sexually transmitted diseases screening, in addition to the routine testing. They are also screened for genetic disorders, such as thalassemia. They should have normal semen analysis as per WHO criteria.

Once a donor is selected, a semen sample is obtained. This sample is initially cryopreserved for a quarantine period of six months. At this stage, the donors are rescreened for Hep B & C and HIV. If negative, the cryopreserved donor sperm sample is ready to be used for a patient.
